Creative ways to use olive oil (including beyond the kitchen)
At Extra Virgin, we appreciate a good olive oil for cooking. Not only does olive oil (specifically EVOO) promote heart health by helping lower “bad” LDL cholesterol while raising “good” HDL cholesterol, it also improves nutrient absorption and contains powerful antioxidants that may help reduce the risk of chronic disease. Plus, extra virgin olive oil is naturally heat-stable, making it an excellent choice for sautéing, roasting, and pan-frying. But what other ways can you use olive oil besides cooking in the kitchen?
Natural Moisturizer
Olive oil heals cracked hands (and paws!). Rub a bit on dry, cracked skin for a healthy, natural moisture boost for your skin. It seals in moisture and prevents water loss (though use sparingly as it can also clog pores).
Olive oil can also moisturize hair by locking in hydration. Apply olive oil to damp hair for smoother, shinier strands. It’s especially beneficial for thick, coarse, or curly hair.
Around the Home
Olive oil is a natural lubricant, too. Dab a bit on a towel then rub along door hinges to fix a squeaky door. It won’t get sticky, nor will it smell.
Mix one part lemon juice with three parts olive oil for the ultimate, all-natural wood furniture cleaner. (Be sure to wipe any excess with a soft dry cloth.)
Can’t remove stubborn sticker residue from your new glassware or ceramics? Apply a drop of olive oil, let sit for a few minutes, then wipe away with a cloth.
Condition wooden cutting boards and utensils by rubbing olive oil monthly to help prevent splits and cracks.
For Practical Purposes
Gum in your kid’s hair? Use your fingers to rub a bit of olive oil into the strands and leave on for five minutes. It’ll help the gum slide right out.
Remove paint from your hair – and skin! Rub olive oil onto the dried paint on your skin and let it soak in for ten minutes. Paint in your hair? Apply some olive oil to the strands and gently work it in (this is especially helpful if it’s oil-based paint!).
Gardening? Keep your nails clean by rubbing olive oil around and underneath your nails. The dirt will wipe away easily when you’re ready to wash up.
Extra virgin olive oil may also help support joint health. It contains a natural compound called oleocanthal, which has anti-inflammatory properties similar to those of ibuprofen. Research suggests that consuming two to three tablespoons daily may help manage arthritis symptoms, and some people also apply it topically to sore joints for additional relief.
But… our favorite way to incorporate Extra Virgin olive oil into our daily lives is to enjoy it:
- As a dipping oil with warm bread or focaccia
- Drizzled over roasted vegetables right before serving
- In salad dressings and vinaigrettes for an easy flavor boost
- As a base for marinades for chicken, fish, shrimp, or vegetables
- Tossed with pasta for a simple, satisfying finish
- Over grilled or pan-seared seafood to add richness and shine
- On soups and grain bowls as a finishing touch
- With fresh tomatoes, cheese, and herbs for a quick appetizer
